All-In Insurance

You already insure your home, your car, and the other things you can't afford to lose. At WPT Global, you can do the same with the equity you've built up at the poker table. It doesn't matter whether you feel like the deck has turned cold, your opponent keeps spiking the exact card he needed, or you're simply a disciplined grinder looking to cut down on variance in your cash games: all-in insurance exists for exactly those moments.

The feature kicks in at showdown, after an all-in followed by a call, and charges a 5% fee. In exchange, you pick from a range of options to lock in the share of the pot that, on average, already belongs to you.

An example makes it clear. You hold AK, your opponent has AQ, and the pot is $100. Once you're all in, your equity says you should win $68 of that pot over the long run. If you choose to insure the entire pot, you lock in a guaranteed $64.60 no matter which card hits the felt.

How to use all-in insurance

On the flop, you're often ahead with the better chance to win the hand. But your opponent can still improve and run you down on the turn or the river. How do you protect yourself against that suckout? That's where insurance comes in.

Once the all-in and the call go in, the table displays the insurance options you can take out to protect what you've already committed to the pot.

And the premium pays for itself. If your opponent does hit that K to flip the hand, you don't walk away with nothing: because you bought insurance, you collect the payout even after losing the pot.

The choice to buy insurance is made hand by hand, and the call is entirely yours. When the pot grows past the size you're comfortable risking, it may make sense to lock in the result with insurance; when the pot is small, you can simply play it the traditional way. Some players set a rule and only take insurance once their equity (your chance of winning the hand) clears a certain threshold.

Maybe you prefer to skip insurance entirely while you're running hot, or start using it before the tide turns. Whatever your strategy, at any point before the river, any time there's an all-in and a call, you decide whether that specific hand gets insured or not.

When you watch a big televised cash game and an all-in gets called, you'll often see the players asking to run insurance. With the insurance feature in our online cash games, you recreate that exact moment at your own table.

The most common types of poker insurance:

  • Bad beat insurance: in a cash game or a tournament, players can agree to offer each other protection against a suckout (the classic bad beat).
  • All-in insurance: once it's in place, this insurance keeps you from losing the entire pot if your hand is behind and ends up beaten by another player.
  • Chip insurance: guarantees the insured player a portion of the buy-in or the prize pool if they bust from the tournament before reaching a set point.
  • Next-card insurance: in a cash game or a tournament, players can agree to buy coverage on the upcoming community cards, protecting themselves in case the board still to come runs out unfavorably.
